The story begins when a Spacer ambassador is found dead. Detective Elijah Baley is assigned to find the killer. However, with inter-cultural relations at stake, the Spacers insist that he work with a partner they choose - a robot partner named R. Daneel Olivaw.

Baley has never encountered a robot like Daneel before - almost indistinguishable from a human. Soon enough, despite the Three Laws rendering such crimes impossible, Baley's partner becomes his prime suspect.
