The Spelling Bee Before Recess

Learning one's spelling words and participating in spelling bees are a nationwide ordeal for every American kid. At the school, the finals are down to three kids: "The Slugger," Cornelius "The Genius" and Ruby. The narrator, "The Slugger", uses baseball imagery and metaphor to tell the tale of who wins and how the other contenders strike out. In the background, in true Carey Ellis fashion, is a subplot of several actual bees buzzing around the contest causing jitters wherever they land. The book includes a list of spelling words used in the book plus two additional lists.
