Review Author Ina Cole is a noted writer on modern and contemporary art. She takes readers behind the scenes, visiting her interlocutors' studios as they weigh in on their ideas, processes, and approaches to mounting exhibitions. The talk often revolves around specific works that are among the most seminal sculptures produced since the millennium, accompanied by reproductions, many of them double-page spreads. (Editors, ARTnews) There's a majestic quality to the artist's studio; a sense of potential in the often-private to-and-fro of an artist as they wrestle with concept, form and execution. From the Sculptor's Studio, published by Laurence King, is a record of where the magic happens. (Harriet Lloyd-Smith, Wallpaper*) A fascinating set of interviews. This book is rammed with revelations on the theories behind the experimental, fresh and challenging approaches to the medium taken by the standout sculptors of our time. Cole is a probing interviewer and has spent years visiting artists in their studios. The results are candid. Richly illustrated, each interview unpacks not just the stories behind seminal works, but gives us unexpected insight into the artists themselves. (Sue Herdman, The Arts Society Magazine) In-depth conversations with 20 artists who have helped to define, and redefine, sculpture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Every one of them has pushed formal and conceptual boundaries, creating ground-breaking works whose influence continues to resonate. (Twylene Moyer, Sculpture) From the Sculptor's Studio offers a window into the artist's practice, by going behind the scenes into the studio to reveal how artworks and exhibitions are created. This beautiful and thought-provoking book - a milestone publication in contemporary sculpture - features extensive primary research and includes an introductory essay by the author. (Derek Culley, Art & Museum Magazine) Once a work of art is out there, its meaning is shaped by those who experience it, not by its creator. These tightly edited conversations act as a sober antidote to this reality, bringing a kind of creative order to the anarchy of public interpretation. While exploring process and meaning in each artist’s practice, the voice of the practitioner is always the main event.
