About the Author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850. He studied engineering and then law before going against his family's wishes and deciding to forge a career as a writer. Despite suffering from ill health throughout his life, Stevenson was a prolific traveller and published accounts of his journeys. Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 in Geelong, Australia, and still lives and works nearby in Barwon Heads. In 1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children's literature and he has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia.
