Review
Breathtakingly honest . . . smart, funny, beautifully written. ― New York Times Book Review
Gripping, keenly strange field reports from the frontiers of contemporary desire. -- Olivia Laing ― Guardian 'Book of the Week'
A radical book . . . wise, honest and necessary. -- Hermione Hoby ― Vice
Fascinating, both because it's always interesting to hear about the sex lives of others and because it opens up an historical context that allows us to understand how the free love of the past did and didn't lead to our internet-driven sexual present. -- Lara Feigel ― Observer
Examines how, for those who grew up in the era of the sexual supermarket, the abundance of options can be less an allure than a challenge . . . Witt is a sharp observer of the behaviour and motivations of others. . . Superb. ― New Yorker
A probing investigation into twenty-first-century female sexuality . . . Witt is as thoughtful as she is audacious. ― Vogue
This is a fascinating look at contemporary dating and love in a digital, tech-obsessed world, minus the preachy undertones of similar titles. Witt examines the future of reproduction, polyamory, porn and internet dating with a curious, level-headed approach, led largely by her theory that our ingrained perceptions of adulthood are actually very different to the realities we are now living. From porn sets and orgasmic meditation classes to public displays of BDSM and group sex parties, she examines how the digital age has changed how we love and court, and how it stands to change in the future. ― i News
'I wasn't any more persuaded than Witt was by the options she investigated. But I am convinced by Witt herself: convinced that it is worth risking contentment for the sake of experience, that it is important to acknowledge honestly both desire and inhibition and that it is this that will take us into the future.' ― Observer Paperback of the Week
'A talented writer who reminds me of Joan Didion [...] Modern sex, she sees, is not very different from regular sex. It's just that we talk about it differently. Rather highbrow. I liked it.' ― Evening Standard
'It is Witt's even-handedness that you remember after you finish reading. She is an interesting and intelligent guide, honest and emotional in a way that you can imagine others will connect with. What's more, Future Sex offers powerful reassurance to those who choose to navigate the choppy waters of the modern world finding solace in hook-ups rather than relationships. The world is changing, Witt shows us, and it's alright.' ― Bookmunch
Product Description
Emily Witt is single and in her thirties. Until recently she had always imagined she would meet the right person and fall in love. But, as we all know, things are more complicated than that. Love is rare and frequently unreciprocated; sexual acquisitiveness is risky and can be hurtful. Having experienced the familiar disappointments that come with online dating and one-night stands, Witt decides to find her own path. The result is an open-minded, honest account of the contemporary pursuit of connection and pleasure - open, forgiving and unafraid.
Book Description
'What is the story we're telling ourselves?' A funny, fresh, and moving antidote to conventional attitudes about sex and the single woman.
